Israeli clinics are implementing modern technologies that can save lives. One of these technologies is the Aidoc program, which is based on artificial intelligence and successfully operates in Tel Aviv clinics, hospitals in Petah Tikva and Beersheba. For several months, the program has been operating in hospitals in the United States, Europe, and South America.
Aidoc is a computer algorithm based on artificial intelligence. The program is able to review X-rays and CT scans and recognize suspicious abnormalities and emergency conditions in patients with great accuracy. It records suspicious areas on the images, determines which patient needs urgent intervention, and warns the radiologist about suspicious examination results.
According to the developers, the program reduces the possibility of error for on-call doctors who have to review thousands of images per shift. The system increases doctors’ confidence in the diagnosis, reduces the time for image interpretation by drawing attention to suspicious elements among hundreds of tomogram slices, draws attention to emergency conditions that require immediate medical attention, and warns the radiologist about suspicious elements on already interpreted tomograms. In this way, Aidoc reduces the time spent by the doctor, which allows specialists to see more patients per shift.
Aidoc is installed on the computer equipment of hospitals. Currently, Aidoc can recognize ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, cerebral aneurysms, aortic ruptures, pneumothorax, fractures of various parts of the spine, rib fractures, pulmonary embolism, and determines the correct position of the tube during ventilation and resuscitation.
The system was developed at the Shiba Hospital in Tel Aviv. It has been in use here since 2016, and all this time it has been self-learning by studying X-rays and CT scans. The program has learned to effectively recognize suspicious abnormalities, which has been proven in clinical trials. The results of these studies are presented by Shiba doctors in medical periodicals and at conferences.
The developers are currently working on additional programs to recognize a variety of pathologies in children and adults.
