Israel is considering the possibility of treating diabetes in a new way. Doctors will be able to use both new injectable drugs and a number of new tools to make patients’ lives easier.
During treatment, patients are encouraged to change their lifestyle, switch to a healthy diet and take medications if necessary. Sometimes there are indications for stomach reduction surgery (nyto-abdominal banding). This is a rather complicated procedure due to a wide range of considerations, pros and cons of the method, as well as individual differences between patients.
There are also several medications available that not only reduce blood sugar levels but also reduce appetite. These medications contain the hormone GLP1, which stimulates insulin production after a meal and accelerates the onset of satiety by slowing the passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine and suppressing appetite.
Currently, two molecules are used: dulaglutide and semaglutide. Dulaglutide (commercial name – Trulicity) is administered as an injection every two weeks and is used only for the treatment of diabetes. Semaglutide (Ozempic) in a dose of 1 mg is intended only for the treatment of diabetes. But it has also been used for weight loss. Studies have shown that a drug of the same molecule in a dose of 2.4 mg (Wegovy), which is prescribed to diabetics, reduces weight by 15% on average. It is currently being certified in Israel.
Modern science believes that drug therapy and diet should be selected individually. It is necessary to listen to the patient, find out his desires and preferences, including in nutrition, and on this basis to select an individual menu, according to which to prescribe medications.
