The team of the Israeli biotech startup SpotitEarly is developing a method of diagnosing cancerous tumors with the help of dogs.
\nAt the first stage, a person exhales for 5 minutes into a special mask, which can be done at home or in a diagnostic clinic or health insurance fund clinic. Then this mask is hermetically packaged and sent to the laboratory, where it is sniffed by a dog. The next step is artificial intelligence, which is able to recognize changes in dog behavior. The computer program analyzes the animal’s behavior and determines whether it is sick or healthy.
\nThe first interim results of SpotitEarly showed that dogs are able to correctly identify patients with the disease by smell in 92.8% of cases. The study was conducted in two hospitals on 575 samples. 174 of them belonged to cancer patients, some of whom had very early stages of the disease. Other samples were taken from healthy people. The dogs made a mistake in only 7.2% of the samples.
\nThis result was demonstrated by our little brothers in detecting 4 types of tumors: breast (shad), lung (rheot), large intestine (mei gus) and prostate (armonitis). The success rate for different types of tumors was 91-95%.
\nThe study revealed the high sensitivity of the method of diagnosing cancer in the early stages, before the onset of symptoms. This is a very important point, as mortality depends on the timing of the diagnosis. The SpotitEarly team hopes to get their revolutionary method certified within the next two years.
